Shed design in New Zealand is changing. Looking at the types of sheds Kiwis are currently building and enquiring about, several clear trends are set to shape shed design in 2027.

The 3–5 bay shed is becoming the go-to

Multi-bay gable sheds are currently one of New Zealand’s most popular configurations, particularly across farms and lifestyle blocks. Rather than making every bay the same, owners are mixing open machinery bays with enclosed workshops, storage areas and roller-door bays.

Higher studs and bigger openings

Caravans, motorhomes, boats, vehicle hoists and increasingly large farm machinery are changing shed dimensions. We’re seeing greater emphasis on higher studs, wider bays and larger door openings so buildings can accommodate both today’s equipment and whatever comes next.

The workshop-shed combination

Another growing trend is combining storage and workspace under one roof. A shed might have open bays for machinery, an enclosed workshop and secure storage, rather than building several separate structures.

More architectural-looking sheds

The basic utility shed isn’t disappearing, but appearance matters more than it once did. Mono-pitch rooflines, barn-inspired forms and sheds designed to complement the main home are giving lifestyle-block and residential sheds a more architectural feel. The Shed Specialists Co. team is already seeing strong demand for customised apex, lean-to and architecturally designed sheds.

Matte finishes and nature-inspired colours

Expect fewer purely utilitarian finishes and more considered colour schemes. Colorsteel reports growing interest in matte finishes and industrial palettes, alongside newer colours such as StonePeak Matte, SandScape, SandBar and TuiTuft.

Solar-ready sheds

With rooftop solar becoming easier to install in New Zealand, designing shed roofs with future solar loads in mind is another trend worth watching in 2027.

While The Shed Specialists Co. team build any sheds, the 2027 direction leans towards bigger access, smarter mixed-use layouts and sheds that look every bit as considered as the buildings around them. We love making our customers’ shed dreams come true and always share our thoughts and ideas on optimisations involving materials used, design or layout.
